NBA All Star Selection Review
This past week the NBA has released the starters and reserves for their yearly All Star selections. This is always a hotly debated topic among basketball fans, as the inclusions of some players result in the exclusion of some players, "snubbing" them for being called an All Star. This year is no different; we saw players such as Zion Williamson, Jaylen Brown, and Zach Lavine be named All Stars for the first time in their career. However, notable players that did not receive an all star selection were Trae Young, Devin Booker, and Domantas Sabonis, which stirred discussions all over the league and its fans.
At the time of writing this post, both Devin Booker and Domantas Sabonis were selected to be all stars in light of recent injuries to Anthony Davis and Kevin Durant, Respectively. The main issue fans were having with these players not being selected was that all three of them were being very productive and putting up "All Star' numbers. Looking at Domantas Sabonis's numbers shows you a player who is averaging 21.6 points a game, 11.5 rebounds a game, and 5.8 assists per game, all while leading his Indiana Pacers team to the 4th best record in the Eastern Conference. This is what some people, myself included, would consider as an "All Star" level season, which is why his initial exclusion from the All Star team was a little surprising. This also goes for Devin Booker and Trae young, where Devin Booker is averaging 24.9 points per game and Trae Young is averaging 26.8 points per game.
The more I thought about the All Star roster and the more opinions I saw online about this topic, I saw one common trend, everyone was saying how they should be All Stars but would not say who they should replace on the list. It legitimizes one's case as to why someone should have been added if one says one player did better than one another. One issue I had with the initial All Star selections was that both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown were selected as All Star starters. I would argue that Jayson Tatum should not be an All Star this year and that Domantas Sabonis should have his spot; Sabonis has simply been the better player this year than Tatum in my opinion. And cases like these can be made all over the list, so if you have any opinions on this topic or want to share your thoughts about the All Star selections please feel free to comment down below. I would love to have a more engaging discussion about this and learn new perspectives. If I had to grade this year's All Star Selection from a 1-10, I would give it a 7-7.5.
